Could Peanut Butter Help Older Adults Build Stronger Muscles?

Could Peanut Butter Help Older Adults Build Stronger Muscles?

As we age, maintaining muscle strength becomes increasingly important for staying active and independent. While regular exercise remains the foundation of healthy aging, new research suggests that one simple pantry staple may also help support muscle power.

A recent study found that older adults who ate a daily serving of natural peanut butter while participating in a resistance-training program experienced greater improvements in muscle power than those who exercised without adding peanut butter to their diet.

Why Peanut Butter May Help

Peanut butter provides a combination of plant-based protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals that support muscle recovery and overall health. When paired with regular strength training, these nutrients may help muscles adapt, recover, and become stronger over time.

Researchers found that eating about 43 grams of peanut butter each day for six months increased overall protein intake and improved muscle power. Because peanut butter is affordable, familiar, and easy to eat, it can be a practical protein source for many older adults, especially those who have difficulty chewing tougher foods.

What the Study Found

The benefits weren’t limited to muscle power alone. While participants’ walking speed didn’t improve significantly, those who ate natural peanut butter were able to stand up from a chair five times in a row about 1.2 seconds faster than those who didn’t.

Researchers also evaluated several aspects of physical function, including mobility, balance, muscle power, and muscle endurance. Their findings suggest that improving protein intake may support overall physical performance when combined with regular exercise.

Exercise Still Comes First

The study wasn’t about peanut butter alone. Everyone in the study also participated in a structured resistance-training program.

This highlights an important point: no single food can build muscle by itself. The greatest benefits come from combining adequate protein intake with resistance and balance training, along with consistent physical activity and recovery.

Choose the Right Peanut Butter

Not all peanut butter products are created equal.

For the healthiest option, choose varieties made primarily from peanuts with little or no added sugar, hydrogenated oils, or unnecessary ingredients. Natural peanut butter is often the best choice for maximizing nutritional value.

Other Foods That Support Muscle Health

Peanut butter is only one part of a muscle-friendly diet. Other protein-rich foods that can help support muscle health include:

  • Lean meats and poultry
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Greek yogurt
  • Beans and lentils
  • Tofu
  • Nuts and seeds

Eating enough protein throughout the day provides the building blocks your muscles need for repair and growth.

Simple Habits That Support Healthy Aging

Supporting muscle strength involves more than adding one food to your diet. Consider these everyday habits:

  • Include protein with every meal.
  • Perform strength or resistance training 2–3 times each week.
  • Add balance exercises to improve stability and reduce fall risk.
  • Stay physically active every day.
  • Get 7–9 hours of quality sleep to support muscle recovery.
  • Choose whole, minimally processed foods whenever possible.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day.

Final Thoughts

A daily serving of natural peanut butter may help improve muscle power and physical function in older adults, especially when combined with resistance exercise and a balanced diet. While it isn’t a substitute for regular physical activity, it can be an easy, affordable way to increase protein intake and support healthy aging.

Building and maintaining muscle takes consistency. By combining nutritious foods, regular strength training, balance exercises, and healthy lifestyle habits, older adults can help preserve strength, mobility, and independence for years to come.
