5 Rules for Staying Fit Through Life’s Biggest Changes

Even people who seem to have their health and fitness routine completely figured out go through seasons when life gets turned upside down. From major career changes and family responsibilities to unexpected challenges, staying consistent isn’t always easy.

That’s why the approach shared by Riley Gaines is worth paying attention to. Rather than trying to maintain a perfect routine through every life change, the focus is on finding realistic ways to keep moving, eating well, and taking care of yourself even when your usual routine no longer fits.

1. Don’t Wait for Life to Slow Down

It’s easy to tell yourself you’ll get back to exercising when things settle down. The problem is that life rarely stays settled for long.

Your Joints Have Been Trying to Get Your Attention. It's Time to Listen. That morning stiffness. The knee that slows you down on the stairs. The hip that reminds you it exists every time you stand up. Your body is not broken, it's asking for something specific. Here's what it needs...

Instead, find small ways to keep moving even during busy weeks. A short walk, a quick workout, or taking the stairs can be better than waiting for the perfect time to exercise.

2. Keep the Basics Simple

You don’t need a complicated fitness plan to stay healthy.

Focus on the basics: regular movement, nutritious meals, enough sleep, and some form of strength training. These habits can provide a solid foundation even when everything else around you is changing.

3. Adjust Your Routine, Don’t Abandon It

Maybe you used to work out five days a week and suddenly don’t have the time.

That’s okay.

Instead of giving up completely, scale your routine to fit your current life. Three shorter workouts may be more realistic than trying to maintain your old schedule. The goal is to keep the habit alive.

4. Give Yourself Some Flexibility

Big life changes can bring stress, unexpected schedules, and days when healthy choices simply aren’t practical.

One missed workout or less-than-perfect meal won’t undo your progress. What matters more is what you do most of the time.

Think of consistency, not perfection.

5. Make Health Part of Your Life

The healthiest routine is one you can actually live with.

Find activities you enjoy, choose foods that work for your lifestyle, and build movement into your normal day. When healthy habits become part of your life rather than another task on your list, they’re much easier to maintain.

Keep Moving Forward

Life will change. Your schedule will change. Your priorities will change.

Your fitness routine can change too.

The goal isn’t to maintain the same routine forever. It’s to keep finding ways to take care of yourself, even when life looks different than it did yesterday. Small, sustainable habits can help you stay active and healthy through every stage of life.
