Could Poor Sleep Be Making You Gain Weight?

Could Poor Sleep Be Making You Gain Weight?

Why Sleep Matters Even More for Women’s Health

Many women focus on eating well and exercising regularly to maintain a healthy weight. But experts say one important factor is often overlooked, and that’s sleep.

A Good Laugh May Be Doing More for Your Brain Than You Think

One sleep expert says women often experience the greatest sleep challenges during the exact stage of life when their metabolism becomes less efficient. As a result, many women are encouraged to eat less and exercise more without addressing the impact that poor sleep may be having on their overall health.

Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can make it harder to get quality sleep. At the same time, metabolism naturally slows, making weight management more challenging.

Your Joints Have Been Trying to Get Your Attention. It's Time to Listen. That morning stiffness. The knee that slows you down on the stairs. The hip that reminds you it exists every time you stand up. Your body is not broken, it's asking for something specific. Here's what it needs...

Poor Sleep May Lead to Weight Gain

Research suggests that consistently getting too little sleep may contribute to gradual weight gain.

In one study, adults who restricted their sleep for six weeks gained about one pound on average and experienced slightly larger waist measurements compared to periods when they got enough rest.

While these changes may seem small, experts say they could become more significant over time if poor sleep continues.

Sleep Is Essential for Heart Health

Experts say healthy sleep is now recognized as one of the key habits for maintaining good cardiovascular health.

Most adults should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Getting enough rest may help support healthy metabolism, improve energy levels, and reduce the long-term risk of heart disease.

Experts also stress that chronic sleep deprivation should not be viewed as a normal part of a busy lifestyle. Instead, it should be treated as an important indicator of overall health.

The Research Has Some Limitations

Although the findings are encouraging, researchers say more studies are needed.

The study lasted only six weeks, which may not have been enough time to detect meaningful changes in body fat. The number of participants was also relatively small, making it difficult to compare results across different groups.

Researchers also noted that some hormone measurements were collected only in the morning, which may not have captured natural changes that occur throughout the day.

The Bottom Line

Sleep plays a much bigger role in women’s health than many people realize. During perimenopause and menopause, getting enough quality sleep may become just as important as maintaining a healthy diet and staying physically active.

While more research is needed, making sleep a daily priority could support healthy weight management, improve heart health, and help women feel their best as they age.
